The final segment of the Passion and Death of Jesus ends when He is taken down from the cross and laid in the tomb. The Christians involved in these tender and emotional scenes are His mother Mary, St. John, Mary Madeline, Joseph of Aremethia--whose own tomb was given to Jesus, the holy women as well as those who did not flee when our Lord needed them most. All appears lost, as grief and total devastation prevail. And yet our Lady knew that this sad day would come, having lived with Simeon's prophesy for 33 years, "this child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted. And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed." (Luke 2: 35) It is this foreknowledge and our Sorrowful Mother's desire to follow Jesus' Divine Will in all things, which led her to endure the heartache and pain of the crucifixion and death of our Lord. And yes, she was well aware of the Scriptures that He would rise again; yet as a mother, her heart was broken to see the tortured body of her Son.

The Resurrection of Jesus is then brought to the forefront of the narrative. James Tissot relates through his masterful paintings the encounters of the apostles, disciples and early Christians with the risen Jesus. Through the mediums of art and Sacred Scripture, we are transported back to the time of these events in the life of Jesus. This volume concludes with the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven.
